Seán Boyle, my Dad, was born in 1937 in rural Ireland. He lived and grew up in the same small stone, three roomed cottage he was born in. With a bedroom either end of the cottage, the central room was dominated by a fire, the only source of heat and where all cooking was done. At one point there was eleven people living in the cottage. There was no running water on tap so daily treks to the pump were essential, there was always a large pot of water simmering on the fire.
As you can maybe imagine, with the fire being so essential it was lit everyday. Turf cut from the nearby bog, stacked and dried, wood felled in the nearby forest and seasoned along with the occasional sack of coal was burnt. The region, Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny, produced some of the best coal in all of Europe, Anthracite, but as money was so scarce it was a luxury. Working the local mine was pretty much the only work you could get; tough, dangerous and unforgiving work!
Keeping the chimney clean in the cottage was essential. Chimney fires were far more common back then and the way the chimney used to be swept was simple, effective and done frequently. There were no rods and brushes for the chimney sweep, so strong yet slightly flexible branches cut from a tree were tied to the end of a rope, a weight on the other end. The weighted end was then dropped down the chimney and the rope and branches pulled through from the bottom. This would be repeated a few times until the chimney was cleaned.
Back then you did everything yourself, including the chimney sweep. You rarely got in a tradesman so you learnt how to do things. Skills, techniques and knowledge was passed down through the generations, families, friends and neighbours worked together.
I learnt from Dad. I used to watch him cleaning the chimney at home when I was only small, he was meticulous, very clean and tidy. Dad doesn’t sweep anymore, but he passed down his knowledge and skills to me, he also gave me some of his old rods, which still get used today. He gave me a great work ethic, a desire to always deliver the best service possible and be warm and honest.
I really enjoy my sweeping. Each chimney presents a unique challenge and nothing pleases me more knowing it’s swept well and I’ve left everything clean and tidy. I’m proud of Sean Boyle and Son chimney sweep, traditional local chimney sweep Bristol.
It’s important for Seán Boyle and Son to deliver high quality and the best possible chimney sweep service to all our customers in Bristol and beyond. We pride ourselves on cleanliness, efficiency and value for money.
The area to be swept is first covered to avoid any escaping soot, a vacuum is on hand and the mouth of the fire place or opening to your burner sealed to ensure there's no soot able to escape. There are differing rods used depending on the job, along with different sized brushes. Chimneys are swept either manually or with a power assisted rotary kit. A standard sweep takes on average, close to an hour. Sean Boyle & Son are fully insured for all services provided.
If for reasons beyond my control a sweep is not possible, such as a damaged stove or chimney, a minimum call out charge will apply, usually half the price of a standard sweep. Any issues found while sweeping will always be reported and you will be advised accordingly.
More info is on the way, in the meantime enquires are welcome.
The positive feedback received for the Santa Sweep has been quite overwhelming. Thank you everybody.
The Santa Sweep will most definitely be back for 2021. Watch this space!
Sweeping is largely seasonal, and I quite like it that way. It gives me the opportunity to be, often outdoors and to focus on some of my other skills and interests, landscaping and garden work. I really enjoy the physical graft of such work, that, along with the precision required to finish the jobs well and to a high standard. I love the variety working this way affords me.
Someone once said to me, upon completion of a new paved area, lawn and trellis, that her new outdoor space 'had enhanced her life, that it had given her a space to relax and unwind.' Such great feedback, because it should. It's an extension of the home in simple terms. A place to be enjoyed.
Here are some of the things I can help with;
Patio's and paving
Fencing, gates and sheds
Laying turf
Decking
Grass, hedge and tree cutting
Overgrown garden clearances
Jet washing and gutter work
Painting, exterior and interior
General property/garden maintenance
Check out my gallery section to see some photos of my work. Get in touch to discuss and jobs you may have, even if not on the list above. If it’s not within my skill set I won’t pretend otherwise.
